Primary Areas of Research

My research is on the genetics and pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D), an autoimmune disease. One of my projects explores the roles of rare deleterious variants in T1D by exome-sequencing T1D-affected sibpairs selected from families with at least three affected siblings. The underlying hypothesis is that rare, overtly deleterious variants with moderate-to-large effects are enriched in T1D causative genes. I have also been conducting functional studies to understand how UBASH3A, a gene associated with T1D and several other autoimmune diseases, affects risk for T1D.
